The Tel Dan Inscription was meant as a kind of propaganda piece against Israel. Ironically, it is now one of the best evidences for the existence of King David that appears outside of the Bible:
The Tel Dan inscription, or “House of David” inscription, was discovered in 1993 at the site of Tel Dan in northern Israel in an excavation directed by Israeli archaeologist Avraham Biran.
The broken and fragmentary inscription commemorates the victory of an Aramean king over his two southern neighbors: the “king of Israel” and the “king of the House of David.” In the carefully incised text written in neat Aramaic characters, the Aramean king boasts that he, under the divine guidance of the god Hadad, vanquished several thousand Israelite and Judahite horsemen and charioteers before personally dispatching both of his royal opponents. Unfortunately, the recovered fragments of the “House of David” inscription do not preserve the names of the specific kings involved in this brutal encounter, but most scholars believe the stela recounts a campaign of Hazael of Damascus in which he defeated both Jehoram of Israel and Ahaziah of Judah. source: https://www.biblicalarchaeology.org/daily/biblical-artifacts/the-tel-dan-inscription-the-first-historical-evidence-of-the-king-david-bible-story/
The House of David by the postulated point the stone describes had split between Jehoram and Ahaziah which all have stories about the unfortunate institution of idols being developed and encouraged among the Israeli people. “Hazael” means the “sight of the power of God” and Ahaziah also has the “haz” (seizure, vision of the Lord) Hebrew base in it, implying that the fight that took place was over the vision for Israel and its future development. Hazael was the “outside agency” that the prophet Elisha recognized as being the sword that would cut off both of those leaders.
If this is correct, in the boasting of this deed, the Davidic kingdom is confirmed and the Word of YHVH is seen to be authentic. Jehoram, the other name referenced in the article, means something like “Yah is high or elevated” and so if we put the whole thing together we find an elevated vision of Yah taking place and a lack of it happening in Israel due to idols. Therefore, the “sight” is cut off by Hazael, whose name means sight or power of God. Much later, the evidence of the house of David is put in the sight of the world–in 1993. To put this in context, in US history, Bill Clinton had just become president, and the World Trade Center had been bombed. These are clear events that would influence the unfolding future of the United States until now, and perhaps the Tel Dan stone is a reminder that the House of David existed and still has a future to be fulfilled.
